Phonics in Japan

Jolly Phonics is the most effective syllabus I've used to teach reading. The kids always have a lot of fun working through the course, and very quickly start being able to put what they've learned to use. Dave's an engaging trainer, full of practical classroom advice backed up by a real passion for the material. I'd recommend him to anyone who's been thinking about incorporating Jolly Phonics into their lessons.
Alex Conley was my Jolly Phonics instructor. His knowledge and professionalism throughout training were of the highest standard. He was well prepared and capably answered all my questions. He ensured that I not only fully understood the material but that I was completely competent with teaching it. His training ensured that I had everything necessary to begin teaching the very next day - which I did!
I really enjoyed this workshop and found the information really useful. I’ve been teaching for over ten years and have been using aspects of Jolly Phonics to teach my elementary school-age students for most of that time. Even after using it for so long, I learned a lot. My students are now all master readers and writers using what I learned. The instructors, Alex and Dave, were engaging, entertaining and really knew the material well. We all left eager to teach phonics. I’d recommend this course to anyone who teaches children in any capacity.
At first I was skeptical about teaching Jolly Phonics to children because I was afraid it was "just not my thing." However, through a lively demonstration Dave Gracey was able to help me overcome my reservations and I was able to have fun! Dave's instruction helped me learn to teach Jolly Phonics in a way that was enjoyable for my students while remaining very effective. It was a joy to see my 6 year olds reading in English and making great progress each week while having a great time!
'Ridiculously efficient’ is the phrase that comes to mind when I think about Dave. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing him for over ten years, during which I’ve seen him continuously grow and educate himself as an EFL instructor and Jolly Phonics trainer. Above all, I was impressed with Dave’s ability to adapt his lessons to students of multiple proficiency levels – effortlessly. And, of course, he’s funny as well.
I first met Dave Gracey in 2008, and from then to today he has been an extremely important resource for me in my career as a teacher. When I first began teaching, I struggled to be effective and engaging. Dave helped motivate and guide me to be the teacher I wanted to be; Dave played a critical role in my growth as an instructor, which enabled me to go on to pursue a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics and to teach at major universities around the world like Georgia Tech and New York University. Far and away, the most important and effective method I learned from Dave would be the Jolly Phonics system. Using them system, I have taught thousands of non-native English speakers to read quickly and efficiently. While Dave Gracey has always been (and continues to be) a great source of personal and professional wisdom, his knowledge of phonics and the Jolly Phonics system has honestly been invaluable.
